Relay Exchanges

This Week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from the July-August 2007 issue of Splash, in which world record-holders Neil Walker and Jason Lezak share their secrets for incredibly fast relay exchanges. Here’s what they had to say:
When you're on the blocks, follow the swimmer in with your hands, making a triangular window by connecting your thumbs and index fingers. Swing your arms up and back 360 degrees, with elbows locked. Follow through, beginning the dive as your hands pass your thighs.
Practice this slowly at first to perfect technique. Then be aggressive with the arm swing, the jump and the timing.
Most disqualifications are from a bad finish by the swimmer, not an early take-off by the jumper. Practice good finishes just as much as take-offs. You should know how many strokes it will take to sprint into the wall. If you over-extend your reach or jam your finish with a half-stroke, you’ll throw off the jumper.
Once you get the technique and timing right, practice with other swimmers and other strokes so you can adjust to different races.
Don't spend more time trying to improve your reaction off the blocks if you're still missing obvious speed elements. Jumping well, tight streamlines, fast kicks and strong pullouts are faster than a good relay take-off.
“Our exposure to NCAA swimming has been key to good relay swims,” Walker said. “College swimmers practice their exchanges in meets all the time, for four years. Training is one thing, but doing them in a ‘hot’ situation is where you really gain experience.”

Silicone or Latex

There are two main types of swim caps out there , 1. Latex 2. Silicone but which one is right for you?

First off with silicone. Silicone caps are more often used in practise instead of races because people find that they way more than latex and arent as fast. This could be for a few reasons, 1. Silicone caps are much much thicker than latex and for that reason cause a bit more drag. 2. aparently the outside of theese caps are not as smooth. Aswell swimmers find that they can get very hot during a practise therefore causing some peole to have a headache. An advantage to this type of cap is that is is very durable and much more comfortable then latex.

Moving on to Latex, theese caps are commonly used in competition, and are faster than silicone. An advantage to having a latex cap is that it cost are fair amount less than a silicone one, up to 10$ less. A disadvantage is that they break alot easier and hurt to have on for a long time if they are new.

Beijing National Aquatics Centre

The Beijing National Aquatics Centre, better known as the 'Water Cube', will be one of the most dramatic and exciting venues to feature sporting events for the 2008 Olympics.
The structure of the Water Cube is based on the most effective sub-division of three-dimensional space - the fundamental arrangement of organic cells and the natural formation of soap bubbles.
This US$100 million premier recreation centre will have five pools, including one with a wave machine and rides that are six times the size of an Olympic pool.
Expertise from all over the Arup world will contribute to the centre, with much of the award winning design work being undertaken in Arup's Australian offices.
